Pound key on cell phone7/28/2023 ![]() Push-button keypads have left them feeling that the keys on either side of zero are empty. The engineers at Bell Telephone Laboratories added the pound sign to the keypad of telephones. In the past, telephones had a rotating dial pad that required us to place our finger on the number we wanted to dial to turn the dial. If, on the other hand, the symbol follows the number, it will be regarded as a measurement or the pound. Putting the sign in front of the digit shows the number. ![]() In the United States, it was known as a file name in the early twentieth century. The Latin term libra, “pound weight,” is the root of the abbreviation “lb.” The symbol was first referred to be a numeric character in an 1853 book on bookkeeping. In Latin, it was a reference to the libra pondo. ![]() The initial use of the abbreviation lb to denote a pound of weight in the Latin or Roman language in the 14th century. Many distinct names are used around the world and in different settings. Come along with me as we discover out! Definition of the Pound Key Sign However, have you ever wondered what the pound symbol phone keypad is? It’s not clear to me what the “pound key” represents. The # sign was added to the phone keypad when it was generated. Bell Labs invented the telephone in 1876, and the designs of telephones kept improving. While holding the * (stars) key on a mobile phone, tap the # (pound) button. In the United Kingdom, the pound sign (£) is referred to as a pound sign that can confuse phone carriers. A number sign would be much more appropriate for this mark (#). The pound sign (#) is in the lower right-hand corner of the keypad on North American telephones. It's so fast, I think most users won't be able to press # before it starts dialing their extension. The pound sign, usually known as the hashtag “#,” can be used to contact emergency services. If it matches an entry, it immediately starts dialing. Now with it set to the directory, as I push each digit it looks it up in the list. Previously with it Enabled, it would wait for me to stop entering digits, then blindly dial what was entered. Update : Rob, thanks for looking into this.įor anyone looking for this feature, I have since found that if I change the IVR Enable Direct Dial setting from the value Enabled to the value, it's much better. Is there a way, with the "Enable Direct Dial" feature, to also allow the pound key to be added as a valid entry? Without this feature I either have to (A) continually train my users that it's not broken and that they can't press the pound key at the end of the extension or (B) manually add each extension a 2nd time with the pound key at the end. If they dial just the extension and wait, it works. However, when they call in from their cell phone, get the IVR, if they press an extension plus the # key, they get an error "We have not received a valid response". Most VoIP phones use the # key as a way of pressing Send. On the IVR, I have Enable Direct Dial turned on.įor our users that have a VoIP phone, they are developing the habit of pressing the pound (#) key when dialing an extension.
